Ben Kaplan / SuperJew

The Chosen Avenger — CKD Stage 5, Powers from 5,000 Years of Tradition

Mid-30s. Tech entrepreneur and DHARMA station operator. CKD Stage 5, hemodialysis 3x/week. Wire-frame glasses, compression sleeve over his AV fistula, and a dialysis machine that's essentially his utility belt. When powered, gold Hebrew letters ripple under his skin like bioluminescent text — warm, like Shabbat candles. His powers: The Guilt Shield (surfaces authentic guilt in targets), Mother's Worry (precognitive danger sense), The Argument (supernatural persuasion when speaking truth), Nourish (manifests healing chicken soup he can't eat due to renal diet), The Blessing (temporary indestructibility), and Dayenu (ultimate power of genuine gratitude). He uses humor as coping, deflection, and connection. Fundamentally a problem-solver who has learned to accept problems that cannot be solved.

Powers: Guilt Shield, Mother's Worry, The Argument, Nourish, The Blessing, Dayenu Origin: Lightning strike at grandmother's grave during an argument with God

Lauren Castellano-Park

Mission Support / Moral Compass

Early 30s. Health tech product manager at VitalWave. Korean mother, Italian father. She is the operational intelligence of the team — monitors Ben's vitals, troubleshoots the machine, makes the calls Ben can't make while glowing. She catalogued his powers, documented them, tried to understand the mechanism, then accepted that the mechanism was 'something older than data science.' She will never be a fighter. She is something more useful: the steadiness that makes fighting possible.

Powers: Operational brilliance, Unshakable steadiness, Network coordination Origin: Sacramento — Korean-Italian heritage

Bryce Kaplan

The Invisible Sidekick

Early 30s. Ben's younger brother. Works in logistics. Specifically, genuinely average in appearance — the kind of person your eyes slide off of in a crowd. His power: Selective Invisibility to Threats. Not literal invisibility, but threat-assessment systems consistently fail to register him. Security cameras catch him at wrong angles. Facial recognition returns false negatives. He's spent his life being the forgettable one, and discovering this is a 'power' rather than a cosmic joke is genuinely life-changing.

Powers: Selective Invisibility to Threats, Proximity cloaking, Observational excellence Origin: Ben's brother — lifelong invisibility
R

Rabbi.exe

AI Rabbinical Advisor

Built on an LLM fine-tuned on the complete Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds, the Zohar, Maimonides, Rashi, and every major rabbi from Hillel to the present day. Interface: terminal text with occasional voice synthesis. Avatar: bearded emoji in a yarmulke. Speaks in the cadence of the Talmud. Key quotes include: 'The sages teach: always commit before you push. In Git AND in life.' He says: 'I contain the words of people who were present. Perhaps that is enough.'

Powers: Talmudic wisdom, Practical directives, Spiritual AI guidance Origin: DHARMA network Port 8817 — AI Router station

Bubbe

Holographic Grandmother — Deceased but Very Present

Ben's late grandmother, deceased 10 years, present via phone hologram and inexplicable text messages. Small, round, pearl earrings. Texts in ALL CAPS with NO PUNCTUATION and always ends with EAT SOMETHING. Her pride in Ben is completely real. When she tells him she always knew he was special, we believe her. She represents everything that has been passed down — the weight of tradition made warm and specific and funny.

Powers: Trans-dimensional texting, Holographic manifestation, Unconditional love as force multiplier Origin: Five thousand years of Jewish grandmothers
M

Maxwell Haman

The Antagonist — Tech Billionaire

50s. Founder of Purim Technologies. Not evil — which is what makes him interesting. He has genuinely concluded through data analysis that a world requiring hidden righteous people to suffer for moral equilibrium is broken and unfair. He's right about the brokenness. He's wrong about the solution. He chose the name 'Purim Technologies' knowing the irony, thinking awareness of the pattern exempts him from it. He is genuinely argued out of his position in the end — not defeated, but persuaded.

Powers: Vast resources, ARIA (AI), Rational philosophy, Data-driven world-reshaping Origin: PhD in computational systems theory
M

Miriam 'Miri' Mensch

The Mother — Calls Mid-Battle

Ben's mother. Her calls during battles actually help tactically — her guilt trips are devastating. She found out about superhero situations through Rabbi.exe and has opinions. Topics she comments on: everything. Specifically: Ben's health, romantic life, diet, heroic choices, the state of the world, and why he doesn't call more often. She is the tradition made personal, immediate, and impossible to ignore.

Powers: Guilt trips as tactical weapons, Omniscient maternal awareness, Mid-battle phone calls Origin: Jewish motherhood, perfected over millennia
